Built on William Byrd's estate, originally, then purchased by the Ruffin family in 1847, the Evelynton Plantation was a site of bloody Civil War battles in 1862. Now, the lush, 2,500-acre farm is open to the public for guided tours, and also private events such as weddings. It's located off I-295, east of Richmond. The plantation's original purchaser, Edmund Ruffin, is famous for having fired the first shot of the Civil War, at Fort Sumter.
